|Houston Elementary School Earns Celebration school Status|Houston Elementary School Recognized as 2015 MN Celebration School
On December 29, 2015 the Minnesota Department of Education announced that Houston Elementary School is one of the 22 schools being recognized as a Minnesota Celebration school. A Celebration school is honored for their effort to increase student achievement. This year, 157 schools applied for the honor, with only 22 being chosen. Houston Elementary was the only school in Southeast Minnesota to earn the recognition.
What is a Celebration school?
"The Celebration school designation is part of Minnesota’s federal accountability and recognition system developed under its waiver from No Child Left Behind. Under Minnesota’s system, schools are assigned a Multiple Measurement Rating (MMR) based on students’ proficiency and growth, as well as a school’s progress towards reducing achievement gaps and increasing graduation rates. The state’s Title I schools—those serving racially and ethnically diverse student populations and receive federal funds for children from low-income families—qualify for designations if they are top performers." "I just am so incredibly proud of our staff and students," said Krin Abraham, superintendent of the Houston Public Schools District. "We couldn't do what we do without the support of the community."
