Road Maps for Learning:  Houston Teachers and Students are Driving Toward Success

April 15, 2015 was “Not Your Average Tax Day” at Houston High School.  Both teachers and students were working hard the whole day on a half day!
Teachers spent the afternoon building Road Maps for Learning by developing and refining Essential Learner Outcomes (ELOs) which provide the structure for building the entire curriculum.

This work was accomplished by utilizing Houston High School’s Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) which “pull teachers out of isolation in their classes and places them into a community based on collaboration amongst educators to improve student achievement.(source)

Meanwhile, fifteen HHS Juniors chose to master the ACT test by attending an ACT Prep Course facilitated by Dr. Milton Dehn.

Dr.  Dehn, an educational psychologist with expertise in testing, has worked in high schools and universities and has prepared hundreds of students for the ACT.  This workshop, organized by Guidance Counselor Crystal Sobotta, included hands-on practice, and specific methods and strategies for answering the different types of questions found in each ACT section.
